Normally, this post would have been released on Thursday. Due to life, I will not be posting on Thursdays, at least until summer. I will figure out a different schedule for the time being. In 2001 Apple inc. launched the original iPod. This was a completely new direction for Apple who, up to that point, only manufactured computers. The iPod exceeded what all expectations, becoming the leading portable music device […]

Please note, I do not play the trombone, and have never actually used one. All this is based on research I have done. If you find anything in here that is blatantly incorrect, please feel free to let me know in a comment and I will fix it ASAP. You’ve probably seen one of these things before. Perhaps in a band, when dozens of happy high school students in pressed […]

Every week on Sunday or Monday I look at one of Billboard charts and choose one of the top five songs to be my song of the week.  This weeks song is Rope by Foo Fighters. My thoughts: Although I don’t particularly care for the genre, this song catches my attention a little bit.  I suppose it would not be #1 on Billboards rock list if it couldn’t do this. […]

Depending on the way you look at it, there are literally thousands of musical genres. It is almost ridiculous. A quick Wikipedia search reveals four separate pages containing all the genres in an alphabetized list. It’s crazy. But do we need all these genres? And what exactly is one. A quick Thesaurus lookup defines genre as a number of persons or things that are grouped together because they have something […]

This title of this blog is slightly misleading. It’s almost like the kind of title that you would find on a one page ad site. You go to the site, and there is a single page with a very compelling sales pitch and lots of testimonies. “Just Learn This ONE Simple Trick to Lose Weight,” “Speak Spanish Using Only 137 Words!” Then it tells you to buy something for a […]

I sincerely apologize for the lateness of this post. If you were eagerly anticipating this, refreshing my RSS feed every 20 seconds, forgive me. I owe you a soda. You know, people can become rooted in their habits. This is particularly true with music. We find our artists, buy their music, and listen to it. Once we get to a certain point, we no longer go searching. Then, when we […]

Pianos are quite possibly the most well know instrument in music. It seems that virtually everyone knows how to play at least “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” But very few people actually know how pianos work. Pianos are an incredibly complicated instrument. If you have ever looked into a piano you have probably seen the hammers that hit the strings making sound. If you think that the hammer is simply […]

Music and movies have been intertwined since movie theaters became truly popular. Even before the advent of the talking picture, some of the bigger theaters had orchestras that would play along with the silent film. The very first talking film (i.e. film with audio dialogue) “The Jazz Singer,” included several music numbers. And music has been taking a bigger roll in film ever since. The reason that music is featured […]

Ludwig van Beethoven is considered to be one of the greatest composers of all time. He wrote music for piano, orchestra, voice, chamber, strings quartets and more. He wrote hundreds of compositions, many of which are still played by many to this day. And he did this all in 52 years, over 25 of which were spent, for the most part, deaf. We wonder how it is possible. How could […]

Thursday I had the opportunity to attend an excellent choral concert in Orange County CA. It was put on by the Mater Dei high school, a Catholic school. I was amazed by the quality of performance. There where several groups, including a bell choir, that sung, although they were all from the same school. The venue was beautiful, as you can see in the picture below. There was  a massive […]
