Good music is work. This point I have already clearly made. But why does it have to be work? Our favorite artists make it look so easy to play music well?
Unfortunately, music is like everything else in the whole world. It takes a long time to get good (unless you’re a prodigy), and many people never get good.
I am one of those people who get incredibly frustrated when I feel others are not trying hard enough. Maybe I’m judging, but I can tell you that I have run across some slackers in my days and they have annoyed the heck out of me. And they get away with it (that’s the worst part). If you want to play an instrument, you can’t fake it. Well, I suppose you could, but someone will figure it out at some point. This is one of the points where performing arts differs from other lines of work.
Music demands your attention. Either you pay attention to it, or you don’t. If you do, you have the opportunity to be good at it. If you don’t then your stuck doing something else. But give it a shot. You never now, you might get lucky.
So, to paraphrase, you have to work for music or it won’t work for you.
